Nerringillah Ecology Centre offers a wide range of activities and field work for schools, families and other  groups.
Secondary teachers, please note. Nerringillah offers field work activities suitable for all current Preliminary, HSC and SC Science NSW syllabuses.
Teachers will see that many options are available for their students.
Adult groups or small families who are looking for a vacation with a difference will have no difficulty in organising with the Ecology Centre a range of guided and self-guided walks and activities for their visit.
Please feel free to contact the Centre to discuss your requirements.

ASTRONOMY

Students and staff always enjoy a walk on a clear and moonless night to the top of the nearby ridge. Not only are animals spotted on the way but once up on the ridge the  horizons are bedizened with stars. Individual stars and planets can be pointed out during a brief talk.

Other concepts usually come  up  during the talk and students often surprise their teachers and each other with what they know. Everyone though is usually in awe of the enormity of the universe.

I am constantly amazed at the number of students who have not seen 'shooting stars' but as they are lying there they suddenly see one!

Even with the moon out all is not lost as the craters on it's surface are well worth a look at. This star discovery is often the highlight for students in their stay at Nerringillah.

New activities and courses are being constantly designed. These are a direct response to teacher enquiries from the 70 or so schools that have visited in recent years. Examples are:
Primary Classes:
bush foods, environmental impacts on our lives, survival, maps
Junior High:
student-centred learning in Science and Geography, survival activities and rope crossing challenges
Senior Geography:
coastal management, human impact on forests, physical aspects of environments
Senior Biology:
adaptations , the Australian environment, human impact
In addition, all established courses are still applicable and please, don't hesitate to call about the new NSW syllabuses for Science and Geography.
At Nerringillah , the Barbaraosophy is that Environmental Education should be done in the field whenever possible. Having been a classroom teacher for many years, I believe that students recall information more readily when they investigate ecology systems for themselves. In keeping with professional field study practices, the Ecology Centre has been designed to encourage appreciation of the natural surroundings. Facilities are basic but comfortable; food is simple but ample. No student leaves Nerringillah without learning something new about the Australian environment. Living and learning on a field studies trip also allows them the opportunity to learn how to socialise with others and how cooperation helps secure friends and support.

I believe that Nerringillah is the best field study centre in N.S.W. I have been running the Ecology Centre for nearly 10 years. In that time I've developed a structure that I'm proud to own.  There are programmes to suit all ages and abilities, designed to suit N.S.W. schools syllabus. Some programmes need a lot of data recording and interpretation of results, while others are more "look and learn". There are programmes to be run during the day and a range of activities during the night.  For those that visit Nerringillah, the benefits in terms of marks, interest and increased application are obvious. But don't just take my word. Read what some of the staff and students have writen in the visitors book in recent times. Barbara Allsop
